ARTIST STATEMENT

My Name is Philip Murphy

As an artist, I am mainly interested in mark making, at times to the point of abstraction, by many means and mediums - using brush, palette knife, fingertips and even balls of sheep’s wool - working with oils but also with graphite, pastel and charcoal.

I have exhibited in solo and group shows in Ireland and in exhibitions internationally and have had works published as part of a promotional book for worldwide circulation.

My recent figurative work explores the energy and feeling of being in the moment and more to what we instinctively know and feel - as expressed by musicians

My landscapes are inspired by Kerry, Wicklow and other parts of the country - its mountains, field patterns, bog-lands, rock formations, it’s colours, hues, air and light. Some of these places are uninhabitable or were once habitable but now left behind

I am inspired by how we make our mark on land - big or small, light or heavy - and how we use the land but also the sense that these marks are temporary and transitory as we move through the generations -
the mark-making of one creation reflective of the other marks made…
